Pond front garden
A revamp rather than a redesign. This front garden had a prefab green plastic pond, standing on ground level. The tall sides meant wildlife couldn't get in or out, or drink from it. The rest of the garden was weedy lawn and sad shrubs. The householders had a low budget, but wanted to be prettier, easy-care, and wildlife friendly.
I made a wildlife pond by building a bank behind the pond, level with the edge. Small animals can now get in and out. Pond planting provides cover, a rockery provides hibernation pockets. It's also been smartened up with a walled front, and reclaimed flagstone top. I kept the plants that were thriving and added more evergreens and pollinator plants. Frogs, newts, toads and damselflies have moved in.
An arc of rocks and gravel sweeps around the circular pond.
Lavender & rosemary planted near house for scent.
Evergreens for all year interest: hebe, lavender, pittosporum, hellebore.
